Consider joining a local bird club. They offer field trips with experienced birders. You might be able to cultivate contacts amoung your fellow birders that will lead to possible commissions, or auction possiblities. You might be able to display some of your carved birds at birding functions. Don't be afraid to promote yourself.
You don't necessarily have to travel far to see birds. If possible, set out some feeders near where you carve, outside your window, off your patio or in your flower beds, or outside your carving shop door. Maybe you can plant trees or shrubs to encourage birds to spend time in your yard. Don't neglect a water source. This makes it possible to take a short break from carving to enjoy the birds at the feeders and at the flowers.
